Written by the band members, the song was produced by Alan Tarney for the group's first studio album Hunting High and Low, released in 1985. The song combines synthpop with a varied instrumentation, which includes acoustic guitars, keyboards, drums and synthesizers.
The original "Take on Me" was recorded in 1984, and took three releases to chart in the United Kingdom, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart in November 1985. In the United States the song reached the top position of the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1985, due in no small part to the wide exposure of its memorable and cutting-edge music video on MTV, directed by Steve Barron. The video features the band in a pencil-sketch animation called rotoscoping combined with live-action. The video won six awards, and was nominated for two others at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards. (I Just) Died in Your Arms" is a power ballad written by Nick Van Eede and introduced by his band, Cutting Crew, in 1986. It was their biggest hit, peaking at #1 in the United States, Canadaand Finland, and reaching the top five in the UK, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland.

Background of the music and meaning of the title
Vocalist Van Eede founded the group along with Canadian guitarist Kevin Scott MacMichael in 1985, and the two made demos that led to a recording contract before bassist Colin Farley and drummer Martin Beadle joined in 1986. The band recorded and released an album of all original material that same year and had an international hit with the song.
The actual words "I just died in your arms tonight" originally came to him while he was having sex with his girlfriend,[1] the French phrase "la petite mort", or "a little death", being an obscuremetaphor for orgasm. After writing down his version of the phrase, he later used it as the opening line to the song as well as using it as the chorus.

"Mony Mony" was a 1968 single by the American rock band Tommy James and the Shondells from their 1968 album of the same name. A live cover version of the song became a hit for Billy Idol in 1987.
"Mony Mony" was credited to Tommy James, Bo Gentry, Ritchie Cordell, and Bobby Bloom. The hook in the song is said to have been inspired by James' view of a MONY sign atop the Mutual of New York Building in the New York City skyline from his Manhattan apartment. As Tommy James says in a 1995 interview in Hitch magazine:
True story: I had the track done before I had a title. I wanted something catchy like "Sloopy" or "Bony Maroney," but everything sounded so stupid. So Ritchie Cordell and I were writing it in New York City, and we were about to throw in the towel when I went out onto the terrace, looked up and saw the Mutual of New York building (which has its initials illuminated in red at its top). I said, "That's gotta be it! Ritchie, come here, you've gotta see this!" It's almost as if God Himself had said, "Here's the title." I've always thought that if I had looked the other way, it might have been called "Hotel Taft."[1]
"Mony Mony" was the only song by the group to reach the top twenty in the United Kingdom; it reached #1 in the UK, and #3 in the USA. A music video of it was made at the time, dated in showing love beads, but a decade and half later would receive some play on MTV.[1]
The song "Mony Mony" has been covered by many artists, including Billy Idol, Amazulu, Status Quo and The Beach Boys. Notably, Billy Idol's version replaced another Tommy James hit as the #1 Billboard Hot 100 single, "I Think We're Alone Now", covered by Tiffany.
"Weird Al" Yankovic wrote a parody of this song from his album, Even Worse, entitled "Alimony" (based on the Billy Idol version). It was about a recently divorced man complaining about his ex-wife taking everything he owns away from him in alimony payments.
Billy Idol's version of the song gave rise an interesting custom in the 1980s. When the song was performed live in concert or played at a club or dance, people would shout a certain formulaic (and usually obscene) sentence in the two bars following each line. One example is: "Hey motherfucker, get laid, get drunk." This custom led to the song being banned at high school dances across North America, although it continues at Idol concerts today.

Spandau Ballet are a British band formed in London in the late 1970s. Initially inspired by the New Romantic fashion, their music has featured a mixture of funk, jazz, soul and synthpop. They were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s, achieving ten Top Ten singles and four Top Ten albums in the UK between 1980 and 1990. The band split acrimoniously in 1990 but announced their reunion in March 2009, complete with a tour that began in October 2009.

With a slicker, more pop sound, the band released their third album True, produced by Tony Swain and Steve Jolley, in March 1983. It was at this point that Steve Norman began playing saxophone for the band. The album topped the charts all around the world, and launched several international hit singles, such as "Gold" and the aforementioned title track which reached number 1 in several countries. In 1991, P.M. Dawn sampled the song "True" in "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss", which also became a hit song.
